Sometimes lessons do not work...

Writer: Miss Carleton Miss Carleton

This week in STEM we tried the "Robotic Friends" lesson from code.org. In theory it sounded great, in practice it was an E P I C F A I L! In theory, one student was supposed to be the programmer and write a program for stacking cups. They used arrows to show which direction the robot was supposed to move the cup. Then the second student was supposed to be the robot and build based off of the program. In reality, students got too excited and just started building and building and ignoring the programs. They wanted to build the tallest and coolest tower and knock it down the loudest. After making small adjustments each hour, I scrapped the lesson by the end of the day and moved on!

So for this week, we are coding on the computers! k-2 are doing angry bird puzzles and are learning about directions. 3-5 are coding using loops and repeats. I have learned that students are the best teachers! When I am unable to get to every student, classmates really step up and help. We have been strictly using the 3 before me rule with coding and it is amazing to see how kind and helpful the students can be. We will be wrapping up coding in the next two weeks leading up to Spring Break!
