Persistence and Programming... That's a wrap week 1!

Writer: Miss Carleton Miss Carleton

The STEM kickoff was a great success! The students came to class full of excitement and left filled with knowledge and even more excitement for the classes to come.

kindergarten through 2nd grade students blew me away with how quickly they were

able to pick up on new vocabulary and problem solve. They brainstormed and showed persistence to find the "bugs" in my marble run and had great conversations trying to "debug" the problem. They encouraged each other to continue to show "persistence" to keep working when the bugs were hard to find. Leaving class they were able to teach their teachers about bugs, debugging, and showing persistence. They even learned a new cheer when they found the bug!

Kindergarten teachers are the real MVPs! This week was definitely a learning curve for me and taught me a lot about how to work with students of all ages. Whether its telling them each task is a "secret mission" or their name tags are lava... I still have a lot to learn!

3rd through 5th graders had their first introduction to coding with using paper programming. They learned the difference between a program and an algorithm. They controlled their partner's Automatic Realization Machine (ARM) to perform a certain algorithm and wrote out the program. They translated their paper coding into real life situations such as building a house or giving directions.

They are all ready to be on the computers next week and start some real coding!

Week 1 was amazing and I cannot wait to see what other adventures we have this year!
